Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE): How It Works, Range and Industrial Uses

Updated October 21, 2026 · by Guillaume Pelletier, Embedded Systems Engineer, InVirtus Technologies

Less time spent searching for tools, automated inventories, and a live view of where every piece of equipment is: that is what Bluetooth Low Energy delivers in a plant, a maintenance hangar or a hospital. Tags stuck on the assets, lasting 5 years without maintenance or running on ambient light, replace walk-arounds and manual stock counts.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a version of Bluetooth designed to send small packets of data while using very little energy. Introduced with Bluetooth 4.0, it operates in the 2.4 GHz band on 40 channels of 2 MHz, 3 of which are reserved for broadcasting (advertising). That is why a beacon can run for several years on one battery, or with no battery at all on ambient light.

At InVirtus, we design BLE beacons and the platform that locates them in factories, hospitals and aerospace workshops, from our base in Nantes, France. This guide gives the figures we measure in the field, not only the ones in the specification.

Key takeaways

  • BLE is not a "weaker" Bluetooth: it is optimized for sensors and beacons, not for audio.
  • Data rate: 1 Mbit/s (LE 1M), about 2 Mbit/s (LE 2M), 500 or 125 kbit/s in long-range mode (LE Coded).
  • Real-world range of an industrial beacon: 50 to 120 m (165 to 400 ft) in open space depending on the model, much less between metal racks.
  • Since Bluetooth 5.1, angle of arrival (AoA) can locate a beacon to within 30 cm (1 ft).

What is the difference between Bluetooth and BLE?

In one sentence: Classic Bluetooth keeps a continuous connection to carry a stream (audio, files), while BLE wakes up for a few milliseconds to send a packet, then goes back to sleep.

The extra range of LE Coded comes from redundant coding: each bit is repeated over 2 or 8 symbols, which gains 4 to 6 dB of sensitivity and 1.5 to 2 times the range of 1M mode according to Silicon Labs (source).

Is BLE slower than Bluetooth?

In raw data rate, yes; in responsiveness, no. A BLE beacon sends a few dozen bytes every 1 to 5 seconds, so data rate is never the bottleneck. What matters in industry is how often the beacon transmits and how much power it draws.

Bluetooth, BLE or Wi-Fi: which one for tracking equipment?

Wi-Fi carries a lot of data but drains a battery in a few days. BLE carries little data but lasts for years. To tag hundreds of tools, carts or medical devices, BLE is the only one of the two that stays affordable per unit.

How does Bluetooth Low Energy work?

A BLE device spends most of its time asleep. It works in two modes, which can be combined.

  1. Advertising. The beacon sends a short packet on channels 37, 38 and 39 at a fixed interval (for example every 2 to 5 seconds). Any receiver in range can read it without pairing: a gateway, an anchor or a smartphone. This is the mode used to locate equipment.
  2. Connection. Two devices exchange structured data using the GATT profile (services and characteristics). This mode is used to configure a beacon or read a sensor on demand.

The most common packet formats

  • iBeacon (Apple): a UUID identifier + major + minor.
  • Eddystone (Google): identifier, URL or telemetry (battery, temperature).
  • Proprietary formats: they add application data such as temperature, light level or motion. InVirtus beacons transmit in InVirtus, iBeacon and Eddystone formats depending on the model.

Why beacon security matters

A broadcasting beacon can be read by anyone, and sometimes reconfigured. On sensitive sites, we disable connectable mode after installation, lock the configuration and remove "Just Works" pairing. This is what we do on lone-worker protection projects in the nuclear industry.

What is the range of Bluetooth Low Energy?

In open space, an industrial BLE beacon reaches 50 to 120 m (165 to 400 ft); in a factory, expect 10 to 30 m (30 to 100 ft) between two metal shelving units. The standard does not set a range: it depends on transmit power, the receiver antenna and above all the environment.

What reduces range in the field

  • Metal reflects the signal: racks, cabinets, bus or vehicle chassis.
  • Water and the human body absorb it: a beacon worn on the wrist or placed on a full container loses range.
  • Reinforced concrete blocks almost everything between two buildings.
  • Antenna orientation matters: a beacon stuck flat on metal transmits a shorter distance.

Reducing range on purpose

To know which zone an asset is in, short range is often more useful than long range. In a bus depot, we set under-chassis beacons to 1 m (3 ft) range to detect only the passage through a washing station.

How long does a BLE beacon battery last?

Battery life depends first on the transmission interval: the beacon draws most of its power while transmitting, so spacing out transmissions directly extends its life. Our battery-powered beacons last 5 years at one transmission every 4 seconds. One option removes the question entirely: the battery-free EosFlex beacon recharges from the light of a workshop or an office.

How do you locate equipment with BLE?

A BLE beacon is located through the receiver that picks it up: the beacon computes nothing, it broadcasts its identifier, and the platform works out its position.

Channel Sounding: distance measurement arrives with Bluetooth 6.0

Since Bluetooth 6.0, Channel Sounding measures the distance between two BLE devices directly: through the phase of the signal across several frequencies, cross-checked with the round-trip time of a packet. The Bluetooth SIG targets accuracy of a few tens of centimeters, even without line of sight (source). Where AoA needs anchors fitted with antenna arrays on the ceiling, Channel Sounding works between two standard BLE devices: fine accuracy without heavy infrastructure. Our next beacon, the ivBeacon Hybrid, will support it.

What the platform does

The InVirtus platform shows assets on building floor plans, floor by floor, and on a map outdoors. It keeps the inventory of each zone, triggers alerts (low or high threshold in a zone, disconnected anchor, upcoming calibration date), stores the history and pushes data to the ERP or CMMS through a REST API, webhooks or scheduled exports. The mobile app finds a beacon with a proximity radar and makes it beep.

BLE, UWB or RFID: why BLE is the best trade-off

UWB locates to within a few tens of centimeters continuously, but needs a dense network of powered anchors and more power-hungry tags: it is worth it to track moving parts second by second. Passive RFID costs a few cents per tag, but only sees an object when it passes a reader. BLE sits in between: a continuous position at zone level, or under 30 cm with AoA, with low-cost beacons that last 5 years and battery-powered receivers. For inventory and finding equipment, it offers the best cost-to-accuracy ratio.

Where is BLE used in industry?

BLE is mainly used to know where assets that move around inside a site are, without scanning them by hand. Four use cases we deploy today:

IndustryWhat is trackedDeployed volumeWhat changes
Aerospace and defenseMeasuring instruments, tooling, work orders across several floors1,000 to 10,000 items per siteGoal: no more tool searches before inspections

Frequently asked questions about Bluetooth Low Energy

What is BLE?

BLE stands for Bluetooth Low Energy, sometimes written Bluetooth LE or Bluetooth Smart. It is the low-power part of the Bluetooth standard, introduced with version 4.0.

Are BLE and Bluetooth the same thing?

No. They share the name and the 2.4 GHz band, but not the radio protocol. A Classic Bluetooth headset cannot talk to a BLE beacon; most recent smartphones support both.

What is the maximum range of Bluetooth Low Energy?

In open space, our beacons reach 50 to 120 m (165 to 400 ft); LE Coded mode can multiply the range of standard mode. Inside a building, plan one receiver every 10 to 30 m (30 to 100 ft) depending on the amount of metal.

Can a smartphone read a BLE beacon?

Yes. All recent Android and iOS smartphones read BLE packets. That is what makes it possible to locate an asset, or a person, without installing gateways everywhere.

Can a BLE beacon work without a battery?

Yes, if it harvests energy elsewhere. Our EosFlex beacon uses an organic solar cell and works from 30 lux, the lighting level of a corridor.

Is BLE secure?

A broadcast packet can be read by anyone: it should only contain an identifier, never sensitive data. Security depends on the beacon configuration (locking, changeable keys) and on the platform (AES-256 encryption, HTTPS, role-based access).

What is the difference between BLE, UWB and RFID?

BLE locates continuously at zone level, or within 30 cm with AoA. UWB targets decimeter accuracy but needs more anchors and more power. Passive RFID costs almost nothing per tag but can only be read when it passes a reader.
